Tammy Somogyi and Richard Baginski are the female and male winners of the 2011 Biggest Loser Challenge!

Eight grueling weeks has come and gone and eighteen members competed for the title of the Biggest Loser. Many worked hard on their workout and nutritional goals, but only one male and one female came out on top (Top right picture: Tammy Somogyi. Bottom right picture: Richard Baginski).

Both Tammy and Richard received a fitness basket from the staff at James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness. The basket consisted of a free one year membership to our facility, a co-op gift card, a 9th Street Deli gift card, health food items, two promotional items from our facility, and a Jim’s Gym t-shirt. On behalf of all of the staff members, we would like to wish Tammy and Richard congratulations on all of their hard work, dedication, and commitment over the past eight weeks!

Biggest Loser Tammy Somogyi

Tammy Somogyi works at the Health Service Department on the IUP campus. She is our female contestant Biggest Loser Winner. She lost a total of 2.48 pounds and 4.2% body fat. Tammy was very surprised to find out that she was the winner of this challenge. She stated, “If there is any competition that you would want to win, this one would be it!” After maintaining a desk job at IUP, Tammy really wanted to get back into shape and start exercising again which is why she signed up for the competition. Her motivation throughout the program was when she started to notice her clothes fitting differently. Her workout program consisted of 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training, and 20 minutes of stretching. Tammy said that the fitness center and its staff members were very helpful to the success of her program.

Biggest Loser Richard Baginski

Richard is our male contestant Biggest Loser Winner. He lost a total of 3.65 pounds. When asked how he felt to be the winner of this year’s challenged he stated that this was his first experience competing in anything like this so it felt great to win on the first try. He wanted this competition to be a learning experience, and was greatly encouraged by the James G. Mill staff to sign up for the event. He had two goals for himself; first was to lose weight and second was to reduce stress. Throughout the competition he relied heavily on his inner drive and determination to motivate him to stay focused throughout the eight week process. His workout routine included walking three miles a day, later increasing this to six miles a day with an occasional incline, followed by a set program of ten different resistance machines that he performed four to five times a week. He had been using this program for a while, but used the advice of the staff members to tweak the program a little bit to focus around his goals. Richard stated that the environment of the facility along with the staff was very inviting and always brightened his day! The advice that Richard would give to those that are looking to lose weight or stay in shape is, “Set realistic goals and stick to that plan. Accomplishing those goals will build your confidence and motivate you to challenge yourself with tougher goals. Self-discipline is the key!”

Again, we want to congratulate both Tammy and Richard for their accomplishments. Getting in shape is not always the easiest thing to do, but your drive and determination has greatly influenced and motivated us all to achieve our fitness goals! Thank you!
