IUP Magazine’s Fall-Winter 2011 issue will soon be in the mail to more than one hundred thousand alumni and friends. But, much of the content is available now on the IUP Magazine website.
Print/Online Features
The following features appear in the print edition and online:

Without predators like wolves and cougars, deer populations run high in Pennsylvania forests and largely control what plants and insects are available for other animals to eat. Biology professor Tim Nuttle recently studied this chain reaction.

Alaskan Gus Guenther is many things: dogsledder, commercial salmon fisherman, carpenter, former newspaper reporter. Now he can add IUP alumnus to that list.

By addressing both academic and nonacademic needs of students, the team at IUP’s Punxsutawney campus is working to ease the transition to higher education and lay the foundation for university success.

Under head coach Bill Graham, the softball team had its best season in school history, making its first appearance in the College World Series and bringing Ruth Podbielski, a champion of women’s athletics at IUP, to tears along the way.

Former IUP associate dean John Johnson is one of many alumni whose family trees have deep IUP roots.

IUP’s third-straight year of record-breaking total student enrollment was no accident; it is largely the result of intense recruiting efforts by Admissions staff members aiming to draw high-caliber students.

What makes you feel good during a winter getaway may be more complex than a vacation from the rat race, according to Psychology professor David LaPorte.
Web Exclusives
In addition to the stories in the print magazine, there are four features exclusive to the magazine website:

David Surtasky and Greg Giovanni, Department of Theater and Dance graduates from the ’80s, recently toured Asia with an international theater company performing noh, a centuries-old form of Japanese musical drama.

By sharing their adventures from Sequoia National Park in Central California all the way up to Redwood Country, professors Lydia Rodríguez and Francisco Alarcón aim to inspire others to travel.

Professor Sue Rieg regrets never thanking her first-grade teacher, who died in a car accident, so she honored him by establishing a scholarship to help her own students become teachers.

Speech-Language Pathology major and Cook Honors College student Jackie Hynson is a nationally ranked swimmer who found her niche at IUP after spending a year at a Division I school.
Retired Faculty Spotlight
In light of the recent deaths of retired faculty members Edward Chaszar, Political Science, and Helena Smith, English, feature stories about them from the Summer 1993 issue of IUP Magazine are now available on the magazine website.
