Student-Community Writing Partnership in Punxsutawney

Loading...

Seven IUP Punxsutawney students achieved the distinction of being “published reporters.”

Thanks to an ongoing partnership between IUP Punxsutawney and the Punxsutawney Spirit daily newspaper, students have the opportunity to submit newsworthy articles and photographs for publication. Dr. Lynn Shelly (English) has overseen the writing partnership since it was suggested four years ago by editor Tom Chapin.

The opportunity to write for real purposes and real audiences is important in the development of writing ability, Dr. Shelly believes. The students who write for the Spirit gain experience and confidence, along with a strong sense of accomplishment. In turn, the Punxsutawney community is informed of significant events and efforts of students.

A total of forty-nine articles were published by IUP Punxsutawney students during the 2011–2012 academic year. This year’s authors already include first-year students Ayesha Baker (Washington, D.C.), Samantha Bennett (Clymer), Morgan Eck (Muncy), Oscar Hernandez, (Philadelphia), Greg Noah (Pittsburgh), Shauni Winner (Fredonia), and Culinary student Andrew Reubi (Harmony).
