IUP Softball Assistant Coach Helps Canada to Bronze at World Cup

IUP softball assistant coach Megan Timpf recently helped Canada to a bronze medal at this summer’s World Cup of Softball VI with a 4-1 win over Australia in the third place game at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Canada went a combined 4-2 in Oklahoma City, including a 4-3 win over the United States, the eventual gold medal winners of the World Cup.

“Playing for and representing Canada is an honor and an invaluable experience,” said Timpf. “Although we had a young team this year with only four returners from the 2008 Olympic year, everyone worked hard, became a team and together we were able to accomplish a third place finish.”

Timpf and Canada opened the tournament with a 9-6 loss to Japan in eight innings before defeating Great Britain 6-4 and the Czech Republic 7-0 in five innings. The 4-3 win over the USA came in game four before an 8-3 loss to Australia in game five set up the rematch in the bronze medal game.

“The competition and preparation this summer will put us in a great spot heading into the Pan-American Games in October held in Guadalajara, Mexico,” continued Timpf. “I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to competing for the gold at the Pan-Am Games!”

The XVI Pan-American Games in Guadalajara run October 14-30, with softball set to begin competition on October 17.

Timpf joined the Canadian national team in 2005 and was a member of its gold medal winning squad at the 2007 World University Games. The team also claimed a silver medal at the Pan-American Games and won the bronze at the World Cup of Softball held in Oklahoma City.

She earned a spot on the Canadian Olympic Team in 2007 and helped her team win a gold medal at the 2008 International Challenge in Blacktown, Australia, and silver at the 2007 China Cup held at the Olympic site in Beijing.
