Griot and Storyteller Carmen Gillespie Joins Juneteenth Celebration

Author, English professor, and griot/storyteller Carmen Gillespie will be the featured presenter at the annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Chevy Chase Community Center.

The Juneteenth Celebration is sponsored by the Chevy Chase Community Center, IUP’s African American Cultural Center (AACC), and the Indiana County NAACP. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

All are invited to this special event, and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. The event is free and open to the public.

From its oriigin in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, the observance of Juneteenth as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, for self-improvement, and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities, and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

For further information on Wednesday’s Juneteenth Celebration, please contact the AACC at 724-357-2455 or the Chevy Chase Community Center at 724-463-0674. Please come and enjoy this annual event. You are bound to have a great time! All are welcome!
