Eberly Hosts Third Annual Business Educators’ Conference

Two departments at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) cosponsored the third annual business educators' conference Friday, March 18, 2011, at Eberly College of Business and Information Technology (ECOBIT).

Professional Development Workshop

Robert Burley, of Burley Consulting in Pittsburgh, conducts a session on conflict managment in Eberly, Room 120, during the workshop.

The IUP Department of Technology Support and Training and the IUP Center for Career and Technical Personnel Preparation, along with the Pennsylvania Business Education Association, hosted the IUP Business, Computer, and Information Technology (BCIT) Professional Development Workshop.

Approximately sixty business teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools in Western Pennsylvania participated in the daylong workshop, which included five sessions on topics such as state standards, classroom management, and K-12 certification, among others.

“The purpose of the event is to provide a professional development opportunity for business education teachers in western PA,” said Paula Andrei, the professional development coordinator at the center and event cocoordinator.

The workshop also enabled business educators to network and to discuss issues central to the business education community.

Kathie Knouse, a BCIT instructor at Burgettstown Area Elementary Center, and Kris Miller, a BCIT instructor at Burgettstown Middle/High School, copresented a session about K-12 certification in business education. Elementary-age children in the Burgettstown area begin learning computer keyboarding starting in third grade, Knouse said.

Knouse and Miller's session emphasized their mission of providing students with early computer literacy.

“With the abundance of technology in our world,” she said, “keyboarding skills will be imperative for just about everyone.”

ECOBIT and the IUP Center for Career and Technical Personnel Preparation plan to offer the workshop again next year, Andrei said.
