Dr. John Wesley Lowery, associate professor in Student Affairs in Higher Education, presented three sessions at the recent NASPA annual conference in Philadelphia, March 12–16, 2011.

Lowery’s presentations focused on the Student Religious Groups and the First Amendment, legal issues for small college mid-level student affairs professionals, and a campus safety legislative update.

Lowery’s presentation, “Student Religious Groups’ First Amendment Rights after Hastings,” focused on the shifting legal landscape for student religious groups at public colleges and universities in light of recent legal decisions, including the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in the Hastings College of Law case.

Lowery also presented a campus safety legislative update as part of the Campus Safety Knowledge Community’s pre-conference workshop and an overview of legal issues for the Mid-Level Institute for Small College and University Professionals, a pre-conference program sponsored by the Small Colleges and Universities Division.

NASPA: Student Affairs in Higher Education is one of the leading professional associations for student affairs in higher education. More than five thousand student affairs practitioners, graduate preparation program faculty members, and graduate students attended the national conference this year.
