Jazz Festival Includes Free Concert on April 3

As part of the IUP Jazz Festival, a free concert will be presented on Sunday, April 3, 2011.

The performance will feature the Indiana Junior High School Jazz Band and the IUP Wind Ensemble, with guest soloists Marvin Stamm and Kevin Eisensmith. The concert begins at 2:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center and follows the special evening performance April 2 featuring Stamm with the IUP Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble.

The Indiana Junior High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Nevin Saylor, enjoys a long tradition of excellence. In addition to conference performances, the ensemble performed across southeastern Australia during a ten-day tour in 1993. In 2003, the Indiana Area School District (IASD) Jazz Trio performed at the International Association for Jazz Education Conference and at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, Netherlands.

In the late 1990s, the IASD initiated the Jazz Artist in Residence program, which has enabled the district jazz ensembles to rehearse and perform in concert with such artists as Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Chris Vadala, Rex Richards, Jim McFalls, Steve Wilson, James Moore, Louis Bonilla, Phil Kuehn, Joe Saylor, and Jonathan Batiste.

Following a brief intermission, the IUP Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Jack Stamp, will present the premiere performance of Greg McLean’s “The Twain Have Met.” This work, originally written for symphony orchestra and two solo trumpets, will receive its band arrangement premiere at IUP.

Composer Greg McLean, trumpet player, composer, and arranger, is one of Atlanta’s busiest musicians. He  has performed abroad numerous times with Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz, (a six-piece New Orleans style jazz group), including at the Singapore Arts Festival and tours of Poland and Russia in 1996.

Assisting in the performance will be IUP music faculty members Michael Kingan, drums, and Nathan Santos, bass. Guest artist Peter Dugas will play piano.
