Disney Awarded 2010–2011 Fabiny Memorial Scholarship

Adina K. Disney

The Department of Religious Studies is pleased to announce that the 2010–2011 Emily A. Fabiny Memorial Scholarship was recently awarded to Adina K. Disney.

Adina is the daughter of Debby and Marty Disney, of Baltimore, although she also considers Israel, where she lived for a year, as a second home. She is a sophomore (with junior standing) with a triple major in Religious Studies, International Studies, and Asian Studies, as well as a minor in Anthropology. She plans to graduate in 2013.

Adina is the founder and president of the Jewish Student Union. “I want people to understand about minority religions,” Disney explains. “I think there are a lot of misconceptions, and I would like to impact a few students about other people.”

She also serves as secretary and treasurer of the Committee for the Study of Culture and Religion, where she works “to promote religious and cultural awareness on campus.”

“I thoroughly believe in religious minorities becoming a more prominent aspect of IUP campus,” she added. “I hope others soon gain momentum too in order to create awareness and knowledge about the differences people have through their religions.”

Since she is a strong believer in the importance of experiential learning, Adina plans to use the Fabiny Scholarship to help her to travel to Scotland this summer. There, she will be taking Dr. Theresa Smith’s class “Experiential Studies in Religion: Sacred Sites of Scotland,” a special topics course focusing on religious sites from the prehistoric to contemporary eras.

Adina receives this scholarship with the deepest gratitude and appreciation, for it will give her not only an understanding of religions with which she has had little experience, but also a deeper insight into a region of the world she has studied through International Studies.
