Concerto Concert to Feature Student Soloists

Student Brass and Winds

The IUP Wind Ensemble of the Department of Music will present a Concerto Competition Finale Concert on Monday, March 21, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. as part of the Sound Choices series.

Originally scheduled for Fisher Auditorium, the concert will instead be performed in Gorell Recital Hall, on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

Following a rigorous competition process starting in December, four students have been selected to perform a concerto with the IUP Wind Ensemble. The process began with students performing a ten-minute excerpt on their solo instrument, followed by judging by Music faculty and students. After several weeks of rehearsal, the finale concert will feature the finest IUP student musicians in this very special performance. The IUP Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Jack Stamp.

The first student will be Marisa Youngs performing Alexander Arutiunian’s Concerto for Trumpet. Next will be Louise Vranesevic, who will perform Maria von Weber’s Concertino for Oboe. IUP oboe professor Stephanie Caulder will serve as guest conductor.

Following intermission and a performance of Gustav Holst’s “March” from the First Suite in E-flat, will be Paul Creston’s “Lively” from Concertino for Marimba, featuring Brett Landry as soloist.

The program will end with the world premiere of Anthony O’Toole’s Concerto for Euphonium, performed by Michael Waddell.

Tickets are $9 for regular admission, $8 for seniors (age sixty-two and older) and for groups of fifteen or more, and $6 for students and children. A special $5 price for high school groups is available by calling the Lively Arts at 724-357-2547, or e-mailing lively-arts@iup.edu. All seating is by general admission.
