Gilbert and Sullivan Characters United in Music Theater Production

Trial by Grand Jury

Music Theater at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the uniquely inspired production of Trial by Grand Jury. It will be performed March 17, 18, and 19, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. and March 20, at 2:00 p.m. on the Waller Hall Mainstage.

According to director Sarah Mantel, the production was assembled “With apologies to William S. Gilbert and Arthur S. Sullivan in a ‘grand’ reworking of their first true collaborative effort, Trial by Jury,” which premiered in 1875 at London’s Royalty Theater.

In Trial by Jury, Edwin, tiring of his sweetheart, Angelina, falls in love with another. Angelina promptly hauls him into court for breach of promise. Though both jury and judge indicate that they have had similar episodes in their own past, they have little sympathy for Edwin and are plainly captivated by the beauteous Angelina.

Mantel goes on to explain, “The resolution of this ‘nice dilemma’ is accomplished, in our production, with the help of some familiar characters and songs from The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, and The Pirates of Penzance.

Trial by Grand Jury

“A grand jury must be chosen and our presiding judge is none other than the Mikado of Japan. So imagine the comic chaos that might accompany a gala reunion of some of Gilbert’s most memorable characters singing some of Sullivan’s most delightful melodies.

"What if, for example, the Mikado actually met Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B. of the good ship H.M.S. Pinafore or the lovely Mabel of The Pirates of Penzance?" These are just a couple of the comic combinations poised in Trial by Grand Jury.
