IUP Brass Day to Include Public Concerts

Thurman

The Department of Music will host a Brass Day on Saturday, March 5, 2011, which will feature guest soloist Demondrae Thurman and the HoodleBug Brass, IUP's faculty brass quintet.

In addition to special events for brass musicians, Thurman, a renowned euphonium and trombone soloist, will perform a recital at 4:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall with an at-the-door admission fee of $5.

The day will culminate with a free concert at 7:00 p.m. in the Dicco Rehearsal Hall, Room 121 of Cogswell Hall. This concert features performances by the 2011 Brass Day ensembles in trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, and euphonium and a Massed Brass Ensemble. Also performing will be Thurman and the HoodleBug Brass.

Thurman is considered one of the stars of the formidable generation of brass soloists. His euphonium playing has been described as "awe inspiring," and he is touted as "an amazing musician." He has a firm international reputation as a euphonium soloist, having performed in France, Germany, England, Norway, and Romania and throughout North America.

Over the last ten years, Thurman has been an invited guest artist/clinician at many of the world's prestigious euphonium festivals, including the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, U.S. Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Conference, and the Leonard Falcone Competition. His primary teachers are John Stevens, J. Michael Dunn, James Jenkins, and Daniel Drill.
