“The Crucible” Is Next Theater-by-the-Grove Production

The Crucible

Next up in the Theater-by-the-Grove 2010–2011 season at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be the powerful drama The Crucible.

Written by Arthur Miller, performances are slated for February 17–19 and 23–26, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

The play centers on the events of the Salem witch trials of 1692 and 1693. Based on actual occurrences, it is about a town whose citizens begin a mad hunt for following accusations from a few young girls.

Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953 in response to the hearings lead by Joseph McCarthy from the late 1940s though the 1950s. Miller, himself, was brought before the House of Un-American Activities Committee and found guilty of beliefs in Communism. The theme of unsupported hysteria brought to the forefront by “McCarthyism” is conveyed through the struggles of the main character in the play, John Proctor.

Jason Chimonides, the production's director, stated, “Our approach to The Crucible is animated most by a primary interest in the psychological dimension of the material, with the political dimension being of secondary emphasis.”

Chimonides, a member of the IUP theater faculty, also continued to explain, “As director, my approach to the play has been one of full collaboration with my student actors and staff. Together we have researched the history, events, and culture of the play's origin and worked cooperatively to develop characterization, staging and performance.

“Our production is one in which every member of the team feels a strong sense of ownership. What you will see on the stage is our work: theirs as much as mine.”
