Saturday Workshop: “The Professor’s Speech” by Rick Kemp

Note: This event was cancelled.

The Center for Teaching Excellence spring workshop will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. (breakfast) to 2:00 p.m. in the Allenwood in Ackerman Hall.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. All IUP faculty members are welcome.

The Professor’s Speech

How you communicate affects the meaning of what you communicate. Verbal and nonverbal habits can confirm, modify, or even contradict the meaning of linguistic content. In this workshop, we’ll identify the components of verbal and nonverbal communication, and then develop an awareness of the habits at play in our own and others’ communication. In a fun and supportive environment, we’ll experiment with a variety of experiential exercises that enable us to communicate more effectively, and express our personalities in our teaching.

This workshop is being presented by Dr. Rick Kemp of IUP. Rick is an associate professor in IUP’s Theater and Dance Department in the College of Fine Arts. A graduate of Oxford University, he also holds an M.F.A. in Performance Pedagogy and a Ph.D. in Theater Arts from the University of Pittsburgh. Rick has received numerous awards on both sides of the Atlantic for his work as an actor and director, and continues to work in professional theater regionally, nationally, and internationally.

At IUP, Rick received an Academic Excellence and Innovation Award in 2009, the award for Outstanding Researcher in the College of Fine Arts, and the 2010 Distinguished Faculty in the Creative Arts Award.

RSVP to Sharon Aikins (saikins@iup.edu) by Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
