December 2010 Sports Update

IUP swimmer Jackie Hynson finished second in the 200 backstroke and recorded an NCAA A cut.

Hawk’s Nest provides the following sports news for December 2010 as IUP prepares to head into the semester break. For complete reports, see the IUP Athletics website.

Men’s Basketball

Darryl Webb scored a career-high 32 points in IUP’s 80-65 victory over Seton Hill on November 27.

With the win, the men’s basketball team’s record improved to 3-1, which includes wins against Thiel and Lake Erie and a loss to Bowie State.

Next up for the Crimson Hawks was West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, December 7.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team defeated District of Columbia 55-53 on December 3 at Memorial Field House, avenging a loss in its season opener.

The team’s record improved to 2-2, which, in addition to its split with D.C., includes a win over La Roche and a loss to Fairmont State.

Next up for the Crimson Hawks will be Shippensburg and West Liberty in the Susan G. Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic at IUP on December 11 and 12.

Cross Country

The women’s and men’s cross country teams both finished in eighth place at the NCAA Atlantic Region meet November 20 in Cary, N.C. Winners were Shippensburg on the women’s side and Lock Haven for the men.

Posting the top times for the Crimson Hawks were Alyssa Taddie on the 6K course, finishing twenty-eighth, and Clint Keller in the 10K, finishing thirty-ninth.

Field Hockey

Five IUP field hockey players have earned spots on the All-PSAC West team for the 2010 season. First team selections are Anouk Sickman and Kacie Klotz, and second team choices are Lydia Dolly, Erin Shirk, and Shannon Sullivan.

The team finished the season 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Swimming

Jackie Hynson finished second in the 200 backstroke and recorded an NCAA A cut during the Zippy Invitational, hosted by Akron, on December 5. Hynson will be making her second appearance at nationals after finishing third in both the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly last season.

Earning B cut times were Ally Long and Ashley McAteer on the women’s side and Doug McWhorter and Rudy da Costa on the men’s.

The teams will be back in action January 5 against Nova Southeastern in Davie, Fla., for their annual spring trip.

Volleyball

The volleyball team’s season ended November 19 with a 3-0 loss to California in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament in Edinboro.

The Crimson Hawks finished with a record of 21-11, making their first appearance in the postseason since 2006.

Senior libero Emily Pany was selected to the AVCA All-Atlantic Region team for the second consecutive year. She finished the season with 741 digs, the seventh best mark in PSAC history. Her 6.62 digs per set, a school record, currently ranks fourth in the NCAA and first in the PSAC.
