December Break Closing Notice 2010

All university residential facilities will be closed and locked with I-Card access systems deactivated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010.

Graduating seniors participating in Commencement activities will be permitted to stay until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 19. Graduating seniors must contact their residence director in their hall office by Wednesday, December 15, to make arrangements to stay until 4:00 p.m. on December 19.

Continuing students may return to their rooms on Sunday, January 16, 2011, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Students are not permitted in the residence halls during the semester break period. Note: Wallwork and McCarthy halls and University Towers will be available for break housing residency only for students who meet specific criteria.

Residence Hall Closing

All residents not participating in Commencement activities must vacate their rooms by no later than 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 18. All residential buildings will be closed and I-Card systems deactivated during semester break. Students are asked to leave for break as early as possible following their last final.

  • The following procedures must be completed by all residents before leaving. Rooms will be checked by the residence hall staff to ensure that these steps have been completed. The university assumes no responsibility for any consequences of failure to carry out these procedures.
    • Remove all perishable food.
    • Completely empty all trash cans.
    • Leave heat valves open (Whitmyre/McCarthy/Elkin) and/or make sure your heat is left on.
    • Close drapes/pull window shades halfway.
    • Close and securely latch windows, turn lights out, and lock door.
    • Shut off all electrical appliances/items (except refrigerators), and check that no outlets are overloaded.
    • Note: As an added precaution, it is recommended that all electrical appliances/items are disconnected from the wall outlets during semester break. Unplug all holiday lights/decorations.
  • Food service is not available during semester break. The dining hall schedule is as follows:

      • Last meal served: 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 19
      • First meal served: 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 16
    • Folger
      • Last meal served: 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 15
      • First meal served: 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 17
    • HUB Rock II
      • Last meal served: 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 17
      • First meal served: 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18
    • Oak Room
      • Last meal served: 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 10
      • First meal served: 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18
    • Java City Library
      • Last meal served: 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 17
      • First meal served: 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18
    • P.O.D.
      • Last meal served: 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16
      • First meal served: 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17
    • Eberly Cafe
      • Last meal served: 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 13

Important Information

The university cannot be responsible for theft or damage to any items left in student rooms during semester break. Students are urged to make special provisions for the security of valuable items. As a reminder, it is advisable for all residents to have personal property insurance.

Residents are advised that any necessary maintenance and/or custodial services will continue to be performed during semester break.

All residential buildings will reopen for returning students beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 16, 2011. I-Card access systems will be reactivated at that time.

For information on semester break housing, please contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life at 357-2696 no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 13.
