Rahkonen Named Finlandia Foundation Lecturer of the Year

Carl Rahkonen, music librarian and professor at IUP, has been named the Finlandia Foundation Lecturer of the Year for 2011.

The Lecturer of the Year (LOY) is a national program of the Finlandia Foundation National begun in 2006. Its aim is to help U.S. audiences better understand Finland and the Finnish-American connection. The LOY presents lectures to foundation chapters and other local Finnish-American organizations around the country. Transportation costs are paid for by the foundation, and the local organizations host the LOY during his/her visit.

Rahkonen’s lecture is entitled “The Finnish-American Musical Journey: From Rune Singing to the Rockland Opera.” It explores how Finnish-American music came from the old country, was transformed in America, and still retains many connections with current Finnish music. So far, presentations have been scheduled for Detroit, Mich.; Lake Worth, Fla.; Hancock and Marquette, Miss.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Tucson, Ariz.; and San Francisco, Calif.

Finlandia Foundation National is the country’s oldest privately funded foundation administering grants and scholarships for the express purpose of celebrating, supporting, and strengthening Finnish heritage and Finnish-American culture and traditions. There are thirty-six Finlandia Foundation chapters in nineteen states and the District of Columbia.
