Peer Advisor Applications due Friday, October 29

Applications for the 2011 Summer peer advisor position are currently available. All materials (application and two reference forms) are due to the Advising and Testing Center by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010.

Peer advisors are the “heart” of our Orientation program. They facilitate the Orientation program by providing new students with an introduction to the campus and its resources, assisting them with placement testing and registration, and acting as a representative of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Selection to become a peer advisor is an honor and a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth. Each year, the Advising and Testing Center selects a group of mature and dedicated undergraduate student leaders to assist with implementing university orientation programs.

The following are a few characteristics/traits that we look for when hiring peer advisors:

  • Flexibility
  • Hard working/persistent
  • Internally motivated
  • Strong verbal skills
  • Open to criticism
  • High level of school spirit
  • Open minded, welcoming to diversity
  • Empathetic
  • Expressed desire to help others
  • Enthusiastic

To be eligible for the position, a student must have attained at least 24 credits by the end of the Spring 2011 semester and have a 2.75 overall grade point average. The students who are hired will receive a $2,200 stipend, free room and board throughout the duration of the program, and an opportunity to work in the Major and Career Exploration Center the following academic year.
