Wacker to Present World Premiere of “On Wings of Song”

Dr. Therese Wacker, associate professor of Flute in the Department of Music, will present the world premiere of Eric Ewazen’s “On Wings of Song: Concerto for Piccolo and Wind Ensemble” at the department’s annual Homecoming Concert on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The IUP Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Jack Stamp.

The twenty-minute work, commissioned by and dedicated to Dr. Wacker, was made possible through grants secured from the FPDC and the University Senate Research Committee, as well as by support from the IUP Department of Music. The work is cast in four movements: 1. Over Distant, Murmuring Waves; 2. Under Serene Moonlight; 3. All Earthly Cares Entwining; 4. Shall Fade Away in Dreams.

The composer, Dr. Ewazen, will be in attendance for the premiere and will be on campus for a few days visiting rehearsals and classes in the Department of Music. This is Dr. Ewazen’s second visit to IUP. In February 2003, the Music Department presented a concert featuring several of his solo and chamber ensemble works.

Dr. Eric Ewazen was born in 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio. Receiving a B.M. at the Eastman School of Music and M.M. and D.M.A. degrees from the Juilliard School, his teachers include Milton Babbitt, Samuel Adler, Warren Benson, Joseph Schwantner, and Gunther Schuller. Dr. Ewazen has been a member of the composition faculty at the Julliard School since 1980. He is a recipient of numerous composition awards and prizes. His works have been commissioned and performed by many soloists, chamber ensembles, and orchestras in the U.S. and overseas. His works are recorded on Summit Records, d'Note Records, CRS Records, New World, Clique Track, Helicon, Hyperion, Cala, Albany, and Emi Classics.
