Award-Winning “Crimes of the Heart” is Season Opener for Theater-by-the-Grove

Crimes of the Heart

Theater-by-the-Grove will open its 2010–2011 season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Crimes of the Heart, written by Beth Henley. The play, directed by Barb Blackledge, opens October 7, 2010, with performances October 7–9 and 13–16 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

This rollercoaster of a play takes place in less than twenty-four hours in the lives of the three McGrath sisters. They have just reunited in the small southern town of Hazlehurst, Mississippi, after their youngest sister is accused of shooting her husband.

As the play unfolds, Mississippi is still recovering from the devastating Camille, a category 5 hurricane. Simultaneously, each sister is dealing with her own level of personal disaster, each having to deal with their own “crimes” of the heart.

Crimes of the HeartDirector Blackledge explains, “Crimes of the Heart seems like it might be a love story, but it’s not. It’s a fast-paced comedy full of laughs and tears about how these three ‘criminals’ have come to terms with what they have done to what should have been love in their lives.”

Blackledge, a professor of theater at IUP, goes on to say, “The show is set in 1974. It is a period piece for the cast, a majority of the audience, and basically anyone that’s younger than fifty and wasn’t raised in the Deep South.”

Tickets for Crimes of the Heart are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building, located on Pratt Drive of the IUP campus. Tickets are also available online at IUP Tickets.com, or by calling the Hadley Union Building box office at 724-357-2547. Seats remaining will be sold at the door starting forty-five minutes before each performance.

Tickets are priced at $14 for regular admission, $12 for senior citizens and groups of 15 or more, and $8 for students and I-Card holders.

The play contains some situations that may not be suitable for younger children. For more information, contact the Lively Arts at 724-357-2547, or e-mail us at lively-arts@iup.edu.
