Students Gear Up for 42nd Annual Geoscience Day

The 42nd annual Geoscience Day will be April 29, 2016. Nineteen senior Geoscience students will present their independent research during the Geoscience Day Symposium. This will be followed by a talk by alumnus John Taylor (’75).

IUP Geoscientists Present Research at AGU Meeting

Geoscience faculty Jon Lewis and Greg Mount, along with two undergraduate students, presented research at the 2015 meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. They presented work ranging from the large scale tectonics of Canada, Taiwan, and Japan to small scale porosity measurements in limestone aquifers.

Hovan Presents on Climate Research in South Korea

Geoscience professor Steve Hovan was invited in January 2016 to present climate research findings to colleagues from the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology and the Korean Polar Research Institute.

Warnock Discusses Baltic Sea Paleoenvironment Research Findings

Jonathan Warnock, Geoscience, returned from gathering with scientists from around the globe who participated in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 347: Baltic Sea Paleoenvironments. The group met in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss their initial findings and plan out future research collaborations.

American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ Course on Interpreting Seismic Stratigraphy

Fred Schroeder, through the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Visiting Scientist Program, will offer an intensive short-course to geoscience students on Wednesday, October 7.

Mount Publishes Research on Macroporous Zones in the Biscayne Aquifer

Gregory Mount and co-authors published a research article titled “Delineation of macroporous zones in the unsaturated portion of the Miami Limestone using ground penetrating radar, Miami Dade County, Florida” in the Journal of Hydrology.

Geoscience’s Lewis Awarded NSF Grant to Enhance STEM Diversity and Training

Jon Lewis will serve as the principal investigator along with co-PI Sharon Cooper from Ocean Leadership in Washington, D.C. in a one-year proof-of-concept project called STEMSEAS (STEM Student Experiences Aboard Ships).
