On November 18, 2009, Safety Sciences Chairperson Dr. Lon Ferguson and Dr. Tracey Cekada, assistant professor, received recognition for the Alcoa Partnership Grant from Alcoa’s Corporate Health and Safety director, Jeff Shockey, and Alcoa’s EHS training manager, Jamie Mackay. President Tony Atwater also attended this reception.

Two Safety Sciences students were recently awarded scholarships: Jessica Bothell received the Jerry Esposito/Citizens’ Ambulance Scholarship, while Tessa Minnick received the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council Annual Scholarship Award.

The Safety Sciences Department held their commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 2, 2009, in the Ohio Room of the Hadley Union Building. This year's graduating class consisted of forty-three undergraduate and twenty graduate students.

Congratulations to the IUP American Society of Safety Engineers Student Chapter on being awarded the 2008–2009 Volunteer Service of the Year Outstanding Organization Award.

Dr. Tracey Cekada was named Outstanding Teacher for the College of Health and Human Services on April 28, 2009, at a breakfast held at the Rustic Lodge.

Dr. Laura Rhodes, associate professor in the Safety Sciences Department, participated in the sixth grade Career Day event at Baggaley Elementary School.

As part of the Alcoa Partnership Grant, a competition was held which consisted of permorming an accident trend analysis on data and summarizing the results into a PowerPoint presentation.
