Whitmyre Wins America Recycles Day Competition

(Events, Programs) Permanent link

The Office of Housing, Residential Living, and Dining would like to congratulate Whitmyre Hall for winning the America Recycles Day competition held among the residence halls on the Indiana and Punxsutawney campuses during the fall 2015 semester.

Whitmyre’s winning effort was a hall-wide program whose goal was to educate the residents of Whitmyre Hall about how to reuse water bottles, aluminum cans, and soda bottles. The community assistants each had a station where they showed residents how to make everyday items from recyclable materials.

Whitmyre’s community won an additional $100 towards their community programming for the spring 2015 semester.

The goal of the America Recycles Day competition was to promote recycling within IUP’s residence halls. It is the first leg of a five-part sustainability competition that continues for the remainder of the spring 2015 semester.

The four-day, ongoing training is designed to continue to develop the already strong skills in this exceptional group of student leaders. Highlights included a religious panel moderated by Pablo Mendoza, with guests Rev. Joan Sabatino, Gerry Pfeffer, and Waleed Farag; a session helping community assistants understand how they can support veterans, conducted by Cory Shay, director of the Military Resource Center; an assertiveness session taught by Erick Lauber, Department of Journalism; and a session on how to apply to graduate school, conducted by graduate assistants from the School of Graduate Studies and Research

The four-day training also included Project Linus, the annual service project which included raising $1,000, purchasing fleece, and making blankets for needy families. New this year was the Office of Housing, Residential Living, and Dining’s sponsorship of a hunger banquet designed to remind the staff about issues of poverty and privilege.
