Area professional school counselors are invited to the ninth annual School Counselor Professional Development Day on Friday, December 16, 2011, from 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. at Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

John McCarthy, a professor in IUP’s Department of Counseling and a member of the Westmoreland County Suicide Awareness and Prevention Task Force, authored “Let’s Talk About Suicide” in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on November 17, 2011, in conjunction with the thirteenth annual International Survivors of Suicide Day.

John McCarthy, Department of Counseling, recently published “Motivational Interviewing: Resolving Ambivalence in Pursuit of Change” in the Journal of Counseling.

Lorraine Guth, Department of Counseling, was one of twelve counselor educators from the United States that were chosen to be part of the National Board of Certified Counselors Thunder Dragon Institute in Bhutan, held in October 2011.

The IUP Center for Counselor Training and Services will feature a workshop on Dialectical Behavior Therapy on January 27, 2012, at the IUP Monroeville Graduate and Professional Center.
