John Taylor, Department of Geosciences, is featured in an article in the October 20, 2009, edition of the Penn, highlighting his participation in the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Show Lecture Series.

Steve Hovan, Department of Geosciences, participated in an international meeting for the week of October 12, 2009, to sample sediment cores collected in a recent research expedition to the Equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Dr. Joe Clark, Department of Geosciences emeritus professor, presented some of his ongoing research into the geologic history of the California Coast Ranges.

The Geoscience Department presents a seminar by Dr. Katrin Moeneke, U. Pitt. Johnstown, on October 23. Her seminar, “Coastal Marshes in Northern Sumatra as an Archive for Past Tsunamis,” will discuss her work on understanding the recurrence of tsunami in Northern Sumatra.

Dr. Karen Rose Cercone of the Geoscience Department will discuss her creative use of IUP's new Moodle learning management software at the first ever Moodle Faculty Showcase, to be held November 10, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. in the Crimson Event Center. Dr. Cercone will discuss how she uses narrated PDF files, live streaming classroom sites, and other techniques in both distance education and on-campus sections of GEOS 101: The Dynamic Earth.

John Taylor, of the Department of Geoscience, will present a community lecture on October 14, 2009, as part of the R&P Coal Show Lecture Series on the “Life and Times in the Pennsylvanian Coal Swamp: The Origin of Pennsylvania’s Coal Deposits.”

Jon Lewis of the Department of Geoscience was elected by his peers to serve a three-year term on the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC).
