Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites

As part of the extensive educational outreach provided through its ArtsPath programs, the Lively Arts will partner with the Indiana Arts Council in presenting a special lecture and demonstration performance by the award-winning India Jazz Suites. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2012, in Fisher Auditorium.

The program features the two principle dancers of India Jazz Suites, including the extraordinary India kathak dance master Pandit Chitresh Das and the Emmy-winning tap dance sensation Jason Samuels Smith.

The presentation of this special performance is supported in part by Dance Matters, a Dance Affiliates program funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development.

The teachers and students attending will have learned about both dance forms by reviewing a study guide prepared specifically for this event by Dance Affiliates. This guide will prepare the students for all aspects of the presentation, with information on India Jazz Suites and its inception, both performers, India kathak and American tap dance, specifics on the program, and even performance etiquette.

Schools across ArtsPath’s five counties of Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson have been invited. The performance is also open to any IUP students wishing to attend. Those attending will receive a free t-shirt provided by Indiana First Bank.

Interested teachers and administrators should contact Rebecca Slak, executive director of the Indiana Arts Council, at 724-465-2787 or

In addition to this special performance, the Ideas and Issues series will present Upaj, a documentary about the creation of India Jazz Suites touring throughout India. They will also present two classes for campus and area students. These will be presented on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m., and the dancers will be on hand to provide commentary on the film.

As the culminating event during their four-day visit, the duo will be joined by a jazz ensemble from New York and another music ensemble performing traditional music from India. Together, they will present the mesmerizing Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites. The performance is part of the Lively Arts’ Ovations! series and will be presented in Fisher Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23.

For the inaugural season of Ovations!, IUP’s premier series featuring touring performing artists, the Lively Arts at IUP is reporting a record number of programmatic partners. Forty-seven groups, organizations, and institutions are providing a variety of support for the season, including funding, educational planning, translation services, hospitality, and more.

Campus partners include seventeen different offices, organizations, and departments, several of which provided funding support, such as the Student Cooperative Association, African American Cultural Center, Office of International Education, Department of Religious Studies, and others. Funding from the campus partners totals $155,568.

The Lively Arts also has seen a significant increase in grant-supported performing groups and projects and received support from several external funders, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, and others.

Part of the external grant support received was through two separate presenting consortium grants. For these projects, the Lively Arts worked with other universities and organizations in the region to secure funding from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

The amount of external grant funding received for the current season totals $97,597.

Business partners for the season include Robindale Energies, Inc.; Verizon; Wilmoth Interests, Inc.; S&T Bank; Indiana Gazette; Renda Broadcasting; Delaney Automotive; the Co-op Store; and Sheetz. This support, including various in-kind services, is estimated at over $55,000.

In addition to the partners, over 140 individuals and businesses have contributed through program advertising or donations made through the Lively Arts’ Premiere Club.

With the support from these partners in addition to the ticket sales projections for performances being on target, the Lively Arts is expected to finish the season with a modest positive balance.
