Downing Selected for IUP’s Distinguished University Professor Honor

A professor of English, Dr. David Downing is known for his work on important topical issues such as academic freedom, intellectual property, affirmative action, the privatization of public higher education, the history of criticism and theory, critical pedagogy, integrating the liberal arts and professional education, the academic labor movement, and the role of the humanities.

Groundbreaking Set for North Dining Facility

The North Dining Commons is scheduled for opening in fall 2017. It will be located adjacent to Wallwork Hall in the footprint of what is now Keith Hall. It will have 500 seats and an “all you care to eat” format. It also will house the main bakery and the central commissary for the campus dining program.

State System Chancellor Invites Participation in Systemwide Strategic Planning Process

The Board of Governors has asked the State System institutions to examine the organization and operation of its 14 institutions in order to strategically position the universities for continued success on behalf of students, their families, and the entire Commonwealth.

IUP CIO Bill Balint Honored with Pittsburgh Chief Information Officer Award

Bill Balint, Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Chief Technology Officer with more than a quarter-century of service to his alma mater, has been named the winner of the 2016 Pittsburgh Chief Information Officer of the Year Award (education division). Balint was one of three finalists in the education division, which is given jointly by the Pittsburgh Technology Council and the Greater Pittsburgh CIO Group.

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Secretary John E. Wetzel to Receive Honorary Degree from IUP at May Commencement

IUP will honor John E. Wetzel, secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, with an honorary doctor of laws degree at commencement ceremonies on May 7, 2016. “IUP is very proud to be part of Secretary Wetzel’s ‘Time To Lead’ initiative and his on-going efforts to help disadvantaged students find success through higher education,” IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said.

Visiting Scholar Studies Stress in War Veterans, Participants Being Sought

Siobhan Howard, a visiting scholar from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, has spent part of a six-month sabbatical at IUP working on a study about how the human body reacts to stress. The research she has been doing at IUP revolves around having veterans—preferably ones that have been deployed to war—undergo a series of tests to see how they are affected by some common stressors.

Passion for Helping Others on Display During Autism Awareness Week

Robert Matchett’s passion for the Autism Awareness Week project is so deep that he’s making sure it lives on after he graduates this spring. He’s working with a close friend and brother in his honor fraternity, Oktober Appleby, and he plans to hand over the project’s reins to her after the conclusion of this year’s event, which runs from April 18 to 22.
