Henry Wong Doe, an assistant professor of piano with the IUP Department of Music, will perform a program of works by Bach, Ligeti, Chopin, Farr, and Mussorgsky in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall. The recital will be presented on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 8:00 p.m., and admission is free.
Prize-winner of several major international piano awards such as the Sydney (Australia), Rubinstein (Tel Aviv), and Busoni (Italy) competitions, Wong Doe will perform a varied and exciting program, including Chopin's Polonaise-Fantasy, Op. 61; an etude by the twentieth-century Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti; and Mussorgsky's magnificent "Pictures at an Exhibition." He will also play a short work recently composed by the acclaimed New Zealand composer Gareth Farr, titled "The Horizon from Owhiro Bay."
A native of New Zealand, Wong Doe received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School and has performed in major venues worldwide, including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. Joining the IUP faculty in Fall 2009, Wong Doe was featured in the IUP Plays Pittsburgh performance at Heinz Hall. This will be his first solo recital on campus.
