IUP continues to be found in compliance with all USDA regulations regarding animal health and welfare in 2009. Each year, the university receives a surprise visit from a United States Department of Agriculture veterinarian who inspects the status of IUP’s animal care and use program.
This visit involves the inspection of any vertebrate animals involved in research or teaching, the facilities in which animal subjects are housed and research is conducted, as well as the files and protocols of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Once again, the university was found to be in compliance with all the USDA regulations regarding animal health and welfare. Dr. Bill Meil, Psychology Department, is chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and is responsible for ensuring that IUP meets all USDA standards.
