Congratulations to Journalism major Kimberly Siverling, who was recently named a McNair Scholar.
Siverling presented her research proposal June 26, 2009. The title of her project is “Shot and Wounded: How Journalism’s Magic Bullet Theory is Crippling the Business.” Her theory is that the media is causing unnecessary panic in the field by reporting that various newspapers are going out of business, when in actuality journalism is alive and well, but the medium is just changing once again.
During the Summer, Siverling will create a survey for IUP Journalism students to take when they return to school this Fall, and she will spend her Fall and Spring semesters analyzing her data and completing her project.
The McNair Scholars Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is an exciting academic year-round commitment focusing on first-generation college students with financial need, and those from underrepresented groups who have demonstrated strong academic potential for preparation in acquiring requisite skills needed for entry into graduate study and eventually earning a doctoral degree.
