IUP Safety Sciences hosted its first Ladies of Safety Conference on April 21, 2017. A total of 72 women, a combination of professionals and students, participated in the event. Laura Rhodes, a professor in the
Safety Sciences Department, was responsible for setting up the event.
The keynote speaker, Valerie Sutton, director of Career Services at Harvard University, spoke about creating a working identity, interview tips, and negotiating salaries. Megan White and Amanda Vaglia also spoke in the morning session.
During lunch, each table was hosted by a safety professional, and students could freely ask questions or discuss any concerns about being a woman in this field.
The afternoon concluded with a question-and-answer panel session, with employees from Cincinnati Insurance, Universal Well Services, EQT, PepsiCo, and PPG Industries.
Overall, many left the conference feeling confident about the field they have chosen.
IUP Ladies of Safety would like to thank the students and professors from Slippery Rock and Millersville universities who traveled to Indiana to be a part of this event.
We would like to especially recognize and thank David Neal and Cheryl Brent from PPG Industries for the generous grant that made this day possible.
