Sharon Franklin-Rahkonen was selected by the Finlandia Foundation to be their Speaker of the Year for 2016-18.
The Finlandia Foundation, which works to support Finnish culture in the United States, has invited Franklin-Rahkonen to be their Speaker of the Year for 2016-2018 in celebration of the one-hundredth anniversary of Finnish Independence in 2017.
Franklin-Rahkonen, whose expertise is on East Baltic, Scandinavian, and Russian history and is currently researching connections with Finland in the Finnish-American population, will travel around the United States lecturing on “The History of Finnish Independence” and factors that enabled a small, less developed corner of the Russian empire to declare and retain that freedom.
