This semester's Science Inspires Series (SIS) concludes with a faculty talk, "A Novel System for Searching Image Databases using Evolutionary Algorithms," by Waleed Farag, computer science professor, on November 12 at 4:30 p.m. in 107 Weyandt Hall.
This talk is part of an ongoing lecture series presented by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Two CNSM faculty and one distinguished guest speaker present their expertise to the IUP scientific community of students and faculty every semester.
More information about Farag's lecture is included below:
The talk will discuss
the pervasive generation and use of various Multimedia contents. His research introduces a new system for Content-Based Retrieval (CBR) of image data utilizing a novel application of the genetic algorithms. The evolutionary algorithm optimizes a set of given features and ensures that only promising candidates are returned as matches to the submitted query. The hypothesis is that the integration of the GAs with an image CBR system will not only enhance the effectiveness of the system but will also improve its efficiency by excluding non-promising areas of the search space.
