Danielle Deal, a senior marketing major and a member of Sigma Kappa
Sorority, was selected by HazingPrevention.org to be a recipient of the 2013
Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award.
The award recognizes nominated individuals who stood up to hazing in
their organizations and on their campuses, and helped educate others about the
dangers of hazing. The award is named in
honor of Hank Nuwer, a long-time anti-hazing journalist and a faculty member at
Franklin College. Five award winners
were selected, including Danielle.
In addition to being a member of the Gamma Epsilon chapter of Sigma
Kappa Sorority, she served as vice president of New Member education, where she
was instrumental in changing the culture of the new member program. Her emphasis was on helping new members feel
accepted and important and to grow into compassionate female leaders. Her leadership role has been to educate
members and new members on the pointless and counterproductive effects of
Danielle gave an interview to the Penn regarding the award, which
appeared in the Friday, April 25, 2014, issue.
