The Orendorff Music Library will feature the local
family group Joe’s Legacy in a concert and jam session on Friday, April 11,
2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons of the Music Library, room 101
in Cogswell Hall.
Joe’s Legacy is an Indiana County string band specializing
in the old time music of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It is named in memory of “Fiddlin’” Joe
Yesolivich, an old time fiddler from Creekside, Pa., who performed in and around
Indiana County for more than 75 years. Members include Helen Yesolivich of Creekside, Joe’s widow, on guitar,
and their daughter, Helen Jo McDowell of Indiana, on fiddle. Deborah White of Homer City (originally from
Spars Creek, W.Va.) plays fiddle, and Carl Rahkonen of Indiana plays bass.
After Joe passed away in 2007 at the age of 94, his
wife and daughter have kept up “Joe’s Legacy” of traditional music from Indiana
County. The band performs a repertory
of traditional tunes from Northern Appalachia. In recent years they have performed at the Indiana Free Library and at the
national meeting of the Appalachian Studies Association.
This will be the
seventh event in the annual Music in the Orendoff Commons series, which features music from Western Pennsylvania and is held in conjunction with
National Library Week. Please bring your
instruments, and expect a good time!
