Broadcast journalism once again goes extra-curricular in the IUP Journalism Department. In February 2014, student journalists revived an award-winning local-news program that airs on WIUP-FM, the campus non-commercial radio station in the basement of Davis Hall.
The old program has a new name: The Hawk Report combines the best journalism of the student newspaper, the Penn; the online newspaper the HawkEye; and the campus chapter of the national Society of Professional Journalists to report timely news, interviews, features, profiles, and analysis important to the Indiana community.
The Hawk Report is produced by SPJ members Dave Gershgorn, editor in chief of the Penn, and Kelsey Breunig, a Journalism and Anthropology double major. Journalism professor David Loomis is the program’s faculty advisor.
The first two half-hour shows have included interviews of a student candidate for borough council, the president of the IUP Student Government Association, the president of the borough’s downtown merchants group, the president of the Indiana borough council, and the president of the university.
The rest of the spring schedule will air Sundays at noon on March 9, March 30, April 13, and April 27. For more information, contact at firstname.lastname@example.org.
