Several secondary science education students from IUP presented research on student learning at the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association (PSTA) conference held in State College on Friday, December 6, 2013.
Science education students Rachael Austin (Earth and Space Science Education), Amelia Crocker (Biology Education), Joy Kiefer (Earth and Space Science Education), and Laura Sweeney (Biology Education) all presented research on student learning conducted during their student teaching experiences at area schools. In addition to the student presentations, Anne Simmons offered a well-attended session entitled “Securing a Science Teaching Position: Hiring Practices in Public Schools,” and Holly Travis discussed “Mini-cover Boards for Science Inquiry,” which generated some novel research ideas for use in varied school settings. In addition, IUP attendees enjoyed other presentations and workshops and came home with several useful items available from publishers, organizations, and science supply companies in the exhibit hall.

The PSTA works toward the advancement, improvement, and coordination of
science education in all areas of science at all educational levels. Its
activities include regional and state workshops, teacher resources, and
professional development opportunities for the science teaching, and it
is affiliated with the National Science Teachers Association.
