He began his teaching career in the Greater Johnstown School District, where he was choral director and assistant high school band director. He has performed with the Emporia State University (Kansas) Jazz Ensemble at the Montreux, Switzerland, Jazz Festival. He is an active clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor, and freelance musician.
Tickets for this concert are available at the HUB: regular $9, discount $8, I-Card $6. Tickets will be available at the door one hour before the performance.
The IUP Alumni Jazz Band will hold its performance on Sunday, November 10, beginning at 2:00 pm. Over 20 IUP alumni, spanning seven decades and all former members of the IUP Jazz Ensemble (previously known as the Mellowmen) or Jazz Band, make up the membership of this band.
The band will be led by former director Kevin Eisensmith, who was a member of the Mellowmen under Dan DiCicco in the late 1970s and who has led the IUP Jazz Ensemble since 1998. The music of two alumni, Dan Borlawsky (1959) and W. Roy Mitchell (1989), will be featured. This performance is free and open to the general public.
The Mellowmen group was started in 1938 as a dance band by Valgene Roush, and later was directed by Charlie Davis.
The IUP Jazz Ensemble placed first in the Villanova Jazz Competition in 1991 and has performed at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference in Pittsburgh in 1992 and 1999. For seven years, the band was involved in the annual fund-raising effort for Cerebral Palsy sponsored by the Franklin Elks of Franklin, Pa. Throughout the years, many well-known guest artists have performed with the ensemble, including guitarist Joe Negri; euphoniumist Rich Matteson; trumpeters Vince DiMartino, Marvin Stamm, Doc Severenson, and Dave Detwiler; drummers Peter Erskine, Steve Houghton, and Jim Rupp; pianists Ellis Marsalis, Jr. and Peter Nero; Hollywood tubist Jim Self; flutist Jim Walker; vocalists Cleo Laine, Rosemary Clooney, and Kathy Wade; trombonists John Fedchock, Jim McFalls, and Urbie Green; and saxophonists Don Aliquo, Jr., Chris Vadala, John Dankworth, and Rick DiMuzio.
This concert will be presented in memory of Daniel “Doc” DiCicco, who was an IUP alumnus (1954) and who served as director of Bands at IUP for 33 years prior to his retirement in 1987. Funds are being accepted in order to name the Music Department’s band room after DiCicco. The vision for the DiCicco Rehearsal Hall in the heart of Cogswell Hall on the IUP campus is nearly realized. Thanks to the philanthropic generosity of many IUP music alumni and friends, the Music Department has received gifts and pledges in excess of $57,000 to support the naming of the department’s largest rehearsal hall in memory of emeritus director of Bands Daniel “Doc” DiCicco ’54.
In seeking the minimum $100,000 necessary for the formal naming of the rehearsal hall by the IUP Council of Trustees, we are asking alumni to consider designating a gift, outright or through estate, to the Dan and Dorothy DiCicco Music Fund. In addition to current gifts to the DiCicco fund, all gifts through estate (i.e., bequest, IRA beneficiary, insurance beneficiary, etc.) will be counted towards the naming opportunity of the rehearsal hall.
