The workshop “‘That’s So Gay’: The Negative Impact of Micro-Aggressions” will be offered on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, from 5:00–6:00 p.m. at Suites on Maple East, G-60.
Have you ever felt uncomfortable after a statement that focused on your gender, race, economic status, or sexual orientation? Although people think sexism, racism, and classism no longer exist in the United States, instead “isms” take the form of more subtle, unintentional messages that we receive based on our membership to a specific group. For example, “that is so gay,” which is used to express dislike for a certain idea, sends the message that people who are gay are bad or undesirable. This workshop will explore common micro-aggressions that people experience and the negative impact that it can have on an individual’s well-being.
Attendance slips for extra credit (if needed for various classes) are available.
