Dance Theater and the Percussion Ensemble at IUP will present their popular, family-friendly Evening of Dance and Percussion on Saturday, April 6, 2013. The performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
Under the direction of dance professor Holly Boda-Sutton and music professor Michael Kingan, musical selections range from classical transcriptions of the music of Debussy and Prokofiev to popular pieces by Toto and Santa Esmerelda.
The IUP Drumline will make a dramatic appearance during Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells.” Also in store will be the combined ensembles transforming a construction site into a music and dance playground.
Joining this large-scale collaboration are choreographers Joan Van Dyke and Anna Ponak-Shivley and guest choreographer Molly Lieber.
A professional choreographer and dance performer from New York, Lieber was born and raised in Pittsburgh. She now choreographs in collaboration with Eleanor Smith. Their work was presented this year in New York by Danspace Project and the Chocolate Factory Theater. Lieber also dances for well-known choreographers Keely Garfield, Levi Gonzalez, Juliette Mapp, Melinda Ring, and Anna Sperber.
Previous performers will also be involved in the production. Students Troy Fitchette, Cory Leydic, and Logan Orange demonstrate their talents by transcribing and making special musical arrangements for two of the pieces. Likewise, an original composition by alumnus Chris Leidhecker will be performed.
Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building, by calling 724-357-1313, or online at IUP Tickets. Tickets will also be sold at the door starting at 6:00 p.m. the night of the performance.
Tickets are $14 regular admission, $12 for senior citizens, and $8 for students and children.
Dance Theater is funded, in part, by the IUP Student Cooperative Association and is produced by the Department of Theater and Dance. The Percussion Ensemble is part of the IUP Department of Music.
