Sarah Neusius, professor, IUP Anthropology Department, and her coauthor, G. Timothy Gross, Ecology and Environment, Inc. and University of San Diego, have just had the second edition of their popular North American Archaeology textbook, Seeking Our Past: An Introduction to North American Archaeology, published by Oxford University Press (Feb. 2013).
This textbook, which has been used widely in North American universities since it was first published in 2007, provides an updated introduction to what archaeologists have learned about North America’s pre-Columbian and historic past for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It places this information in the context of contemporary archaeological practice and provides case studies drawn from both academic archaeology and Cultural Resource Management. Besides case studies, this book include profiles of contemporary archaeologists, issues and debates sections, and special features on key artifacts.
The first edition of this book was praised for being the first textbook on this subject to address the findings of North American archaeology in ethical, political, and social context.
