The Lively Arts will help the area celebrate Black History Month with the first of two exciting visits by renowned jazz violinist John Blake Jr. Blake will present several outreach sessions to various area schools, as well as be featured in a Jazz Jam session, and then an open rehearsal of the Vivaldi Violin Concerto, as arranged for two jazz violins by IUP professor of music Stanley Chepaitis.
An open rehearsal from 3:30–5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013, in Gorell Recital Hall (second floor of Sutton Hall) kicks off this first visit as Blake and Chepaitis rehearse a string orchestra made up of top IUP students and high school honors students as they prepare Chepaitis’ arrangement of the Vivaldi Violin Concerto. The rehearsal is open to anyone who would like to see how a brand-new work such as this is rehearsed and put together by two musicians with decades of experience between them. The arrangement will be premiered on February 21 when Blake returns to Indiana with his quartet for an Ovations! series performance.
A Jazz Jam session at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening, February 4, in Room 121 of Cogswell Hall is the centerpiece of Blake’s visit and features three of the top jazz students at IUP as they provide the rhythm section backing up Blake and Chepaitis for the jam session. Anyone throughout the community who enjoys jazz is invited to “bring their ax” and join in for an evening of great jazz standards, predominantly by African-American composers.
As a frequent guest lecturer and music clinician, Blake believes strongly in educating the next generation about African-American music and composers and will be visiting four area schools as part of this initial visit, including United Jr./Sr. High School, Blairsville Elementary, Indiana Middle School, and Saltsburg Elementary.
If you are interested in attending and participating in any of these events, or if you are a teacher or principal who would like your students and school to be considered for future outreach sessions, please contact ArtsPath associate director Jeff Wacker at 724-357-2787 (ARTS) or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
