The Society for Human Resource Management Undergraduate Chapter (SHRM) sponsored a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center company tour in Pittsburgh on November 9, 2012, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
SHRM sponsored this tour to allow students in the
Eberly College of Business and Information Technology to network with UPMC employees at the U.S. Steel Building in Pittsburgh. Students were encouraged to bring resumes and dress formally to present themselves as professionals toward these employees.
Students were allowed a once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in an extensive tour of the 60th floor of the landmark U.S. Steel building in Pittsburgh and the UPMC
Center for Connected Medicine.
On the first part of the tour, an IUP alumnus led the students through a tour given in the same fashion as it would be delivered to a large corporate account. He told a story about a young child and her journey through UPMC's system. This story gave the students insight to the advances of technology that UPMC implements to provide high-quality care to their patients.
On the second part of the tour, the students met with Ryan Hudson, IUP alumnus and director of Recruiting. Hudson explained his journey at IUP and how he received his position at UPMC. He gave students tips for getting hired after college, and personally spoke with each student to give in-depth advice.
“I think the tour is quite a testament to not only SHRM and its leaders, but to the Eberly College of Business at large,” said SHRM member Matt Pearce. “That UPMC actively recruits students from IUP says a lot for what we are accomplishing as a university and the impact our graduates continue to have in the workplace.”
By networking with professionals, students have the chance to score internships and even future careers. Students enjoyed this real-world opportunity to gain insight from these professionals that allowed them to think about their futures after college.
