Students seeking advice regarding business etiquette in career fairs, interviews, and other recruitment opportunities were allowed the chance to attend a
Six O’Clock Series event focusing on this information.
The discussion, “How to Rock a Career Fair,” took place October 1, 2012, in the Ohio Room at the HUB.
Provided by the IUP
Career Development Center and sponsored by the Society of Human Resource Management Undergraduate Chapter (Undergrad SHRM), “How to Rock a Career Fair” supplied information to students in recruitment opportunities regarding resumes, dress code, business cards, and overall attitude. Panelists of professionals such as IT account executive Jared Just, human resource manager Heidi Milne, campus relations specialist Jeff Peters, and human resources specialist Kacie Carl joined together to offer their advice to students.
“The knowledge gained from this experience was very valuable and helpful in present and future career encounters,” said Kristen Carey, a senior undergraduate student who attended the series. “What I found interesting was to know that some companies have mentoring programs with students. They like to stay abreast on what students are into and what they are looking for after college. I was happy to know that many of the answers the panel was saying overlapped with the teachings of IUP professors. This will make me more prepared for the near and exciting future.”
The number of people who attended the event was pleasantly greater than originally expected. The Ohio Room was filled with students and faculty alike who wished to listen in on the panel’s advice.
By sponsoring this event, Undergrad SHRM afforded students the opportunity to interact with human resource professionals on the panel. The group plans to sponsor additional events in order to continuously allow both parties to collaborate together.
