The International Friendship Program is now accepting applications from faculty, staff, and Indiana community members.
This valuable and rewarding program, sponsored by the Office of International Education, promotes international understanding by matching community members, young and old, or families, with two or more international students.
Volunteers and students are matched for the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters) and are asked to stay in touch with their matched friends through whatever means they choose, and to meet in person several times a semester, at least once a month, to keep your friendship growing.
There is no financial obligation, students do not stay with the volunteers, and friends are free to make their own schedules to meet.
What happens after a community volunteer is assigned will depend on the mutual interests of the partners. Volunteers have shared many different experiences with their international friends in the past, including:
Every year, hundreds of international students come to IUP to study, do research, or learn English. As you can imagine, they are all very curious about American culture. They arrive with many notions and expectations based on information they have received through the Internet, movies, books, and word of mouth.
The International Friendship Program was designed to give community members the opportunity to extend hospitality to international students, which facilitates intercultural interaction, promotes global goodwill, and forms life-long friendships. Also, community members have the opportunity to learn about the diverse cultures of our international students.
