As part of IUP’s Ideas and Issues series, the Lively Arts will present a screening of Upaj: Improvise. The documentary film, shown in conjunction with the performance of Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites, will be presented on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the Eberly Auditorium at the Eberly College of Business. Admission is free.
Upaj: Improvise takes us behind the scenes to watch the birth of India Jazz Suites, a phenomenal East-meets-West dance collaboration featuring tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith and kathak master Pandit Chitresh Das. Both will be on hand for the film and answer questions during a post-film question-and-answer session.
Smith is an Emmy Award-winning rising tap star based in New York. Das exemplifies the elegance and mathematical precision of India’s classical dance form.
Shot backstage and on the pulsating streets of India and the United States, Upaj captures the exhilaration and exhaustion of the India Jazz Suites tour and the resolutions Das and Smith must make to complete their artistic journey together.
As the two join forces, an unlikely friendship develops that bridges continents, generations, cultures, and communities as well as the largely unknown histories of their respective art forms.
The film is by Hoku Uchiyama and produced by the Center for Asian American Media in association with IndiPendent Films. It premiered in March 2011 at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.
The duo, along with their musicians, will then present a live performance of Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites on Friday, May 23, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium.
