As the next event for the inaugural season of the Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at IUP will present the the DePue Brothers Band. With a rousing mix of bluegrass, jazz fusion, classical, and rock, the concert will be presented Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located in Sutton Hall. A reception will follow the concert.
The group, originally hailing from northwest Ohio, is now based out of Philadelphia. Brothers, Wallace and Jason DePue will be joined by fellow musicians Mark Cosgrove, Don Liuzii, Michael Munford, and Kevin MacConnell. Each member contributes to the collective bluegrass experience in their own way.
The DePue Brothers have been quoted as playing the violin “effortlessly.” Wallace DePue serves as the assistant concertmaster for the Philly Pops and has served as co-concertmaster for two of John Williams’ “Star Wars” Orchestra tours. His voice has no limits as he sings from rock to bluegrass and even to a bit of yodeling.
Jason DePue is currently a member of the first violin section for the famed Philadelphia Orchestra, recently completing his eleventh season. He has also served as concertmaster of the New York String Seminar and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra.
Cosgrove has won the U.S. National Flat-picking Guitar Championship as well as the Doc Watson Guitar Championship.
Liuzzi has been the principal timpanist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 22 years. His previous orchestral position was as a percussionist with the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Munford is known as one of the top and most creative banjoists of his generation, while MacConnell, bass, has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philly Pops, and the Mann Center Orchestra.
The program will be filled with original tunes, traditional melodies, and unique arrangements.
