Dr. Krys Kaniasty of the Department of Psychology gave the invited keynote address at the forty-sixth annual conference of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
The APS is the largest professional association for psychologists in Australia, currently representing over 20,000 members. The conference took place in Canberra (capital of Australia), October 2–8, 2011.
The major point of Kaniasty’s presentation (“Disasters or Social Catastrophes? On Social Psychological Reactions of Communities Coping with Natural and Human-Induced Disasters”) was that maintaining strong social ties in the aftermath of disasters is just as important as rebuilding infrastructure to help people overcome traumatic events.
