IUP’s Ashton Smith (Scarborough, Ont./West Hill Collegiate) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Men’s Basketball Athlete of Week, it was announced on Monday, December 12, 2011.
Smith averaged 27.5 points per game this week and led the fourteenth-ranked Crimson Hawks to a weekend sweep of PSAC East opponents East Stroudsburg and Kutztown.
On Friday, Smith was 8-of-15 from the floor for a game-high 22 points as IUP knocked off East Stroudsburg by a score of 65-64. Smith connected on 5-of-7 free throw attempts and added a team-high three assists.
Smith would follow his excellent performance on Friday with a career-day in Saturday’s 78-72 victory over Kutztown. He finished with a career-high 33 points, with 18 coming in the second half alone. Smith was 61.0 percent shooting from the floor, including a clutch jumper with just over a minute to play that sealed the win for the Crimson Hawks. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and dished three assists.
The Crimson Hawks (7-1, 5-1) are back in action this weekend when they host the Indiana Regional Medical Center Classic at Kovalchick Complex. IUP takes on West Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 16, before tipping off against Urbana at 7:30 pm. Saturday night, December 17.
