Dr. Kevin Eisensmith, professor of Trumpet at IUP, recently participated in two trumpet festivals in Russia.
On October 4–13, 2011, Eisensmith traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, and then to Moscow, where he participated in two different trumpet festivals. He was one of four U.S. trumpet players invited to participate in the International Trumpet Festival of Russia, held in St. Petersburg with Irina Vakulenko, director. Also featured at this event were Dr. P. Bradley Ulrich, professor of Trumpet at Western Carolina University, Dr. Grant Peters, professor of Trumpet at Missouri State University, and Dr. Rick Bogard, Professor of trumpet at the University of Texas at Arlington. While in St. Petersburg, he participated in a master class with students of the Russia Academy of Music and invited guests and participated in two performances: a trumpet and piano recital held at the Russian National Library in the “Italian Palace,” and a final gala concert with the Wind Orchestra of St. Petersburg in the Glinka Cappella Hall.
Following the five-day stay in St. Petersburg, Eisensmith traveled to Moscow, where he again presented clinics and master classes to students of the Moscow Conservatory and participated in a gala concert as part of the Moscow Brass Day festival. This event was organized by Vladislav Lavrik, principal trumpeter with the Russian National Orchestra, and included the principal brass players from five different professional orchestras that are sponsored by the Russian government and which are located in Moscow.
While in Russia, he also had the opportunity to visit several museums, cathedrals, and other historic sites, including the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Cemetery), where numerous famous Russian composers are buried, including Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Moussorgsky.
